Working With Macbeth

Maya Gallery of Contemporary Art and Logos Theatre present "A Performance Based Approach to Teaching Shakespeare: Working With Macbeth", a workshop for educators facilitated by Arka Mukhopadhyay.

Overview: This workshop is designed for teachers of middle and high school, and lecturers in colleges, who teach Shakespearean texts to their students. It is not intended to supplant the traditional (and important) approaches such as critical analysis. However, it attempts to bring in ideas from the world of contemporary performance (devised theatre, performance art, installation, etc.), which would make it easier for students to relate to the texts more easily, and derive a sense of creative enjoyment while working on them.

Methodology: The text chosen as a model in the workshop is Macbeth, but the ideas discussed/ generated can be applied to any of the plays. The workshop is completely experiential and activity based in nature. It will start off with basic physical preparation, which the teachers can use back in their classrooms, and will then systematically examine how the study of the text can be enlivened by employing basic dramatic usage of the voice, body and space within the confines of the classroom. It will then proceed to look at how various parts of the text can be associated to contemporary reality, and how this can be a foundation for performance ideas. The next stage would be the interpretation of elements of the text visually, sculpturally and through simple installations, using material readily accessible in a classroom. Techniques through which the students might associate the personal and the universal, with the text as the focusing element, will be discussed, and performance based approaches to specific themes in the play, such as darkness, blood, and the nature of the witches (in a post-modern context) will round off the session.

Facilitator profile: Arka Mukhopadhyay is a poet, director and performer. He is the founder and artistic director of Logos Theatre, and has extensive experience in designing and facilitating workshops both in the corporate as well as the educational space. He has taught at an international school and has worked with educational institutions in different parts of the country. His solo, devised Shakespearean performance, Shreds and Patches, has been performed to critical acclaim in different parts of the country.

Dates: August 7th and 8th

Time: 14:00 - 18:00

Venue: Maya Gallery of Contemporary art, #59, Nandidurga Road

Number of participants: Each institution should send a maximum of two participants. The workshop is limited to twelve participants and registrations will close once twelve participants have registered.

Fees: 2,500/- (inclusive of refreshments and cost of materials)

Registration closes by: August 4th.

Today is the sad day, when two greats of World Cinema were claimed by the ironic hand of destiny on the same day last year - Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni. Bergman was 87 and Antonioni was 94. With the death of these two great masters an era came to an end.

We take this first year anniversary to announce 'Remembering Bergman: A Retrospective', a film festival of 7 great films of Bergman, across 6 cities and hosted by the Swedish Embassy in collaboration with Palador Pictures.

The highlight of the film is that such a retrospective with the original prints of Bergman films is being held for the first time in the country in such a grand scale.

The festival begins from the 8th of August on Delhi and after a week there it will pass on to Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai.  For more details like time, venue etc. visit: www.mypalador.com/festival For other details like partnerships or bulk booking of passes, please mail to amit@mypalador.com or call him at +91 9920200988.

Woody Allen said of Bergman: "Probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera..."

Do not miss this great opportunity to see Ingmar Bergman's films on the big screen. Also, please help spread the word about the same by forwarding this mail.
